The Umbwe Route is a short, steep and scenic route which approaches the summit from the south. It is the least used route on the mountain and also the most demanding. This route offers spectacular views and a fast summit approach, but due to the latter it is not the best route in terms of acclimatization.

DAY 1
PRE DAY: Arriving in Tanzania

Our Kilimanjaro adventure starts the Moment, on your arrival at Kilimanjaro international Airport / Arusha Airport, one of our welcoming transfer drivers will take you to your selected accommodation for the night, Rest in the afternoon or relax at the pool. Our operations team will meet you to check all your equipment and to give you a thorough briefing of what to expect on your trek.
DAY 2
Umbwe Gate (1800m) – Umbwe Cave Camp (2940m)
After an early breakfast at your hotel, you will be picked up from Arusha and driven to the Umbwe Gate. About halfway up the trail you will have a lunch break and you will reach the Umbwe Cave Camp, in the late afternoon or early evening. The porters and chef, who move very fast up the mountain, will reach camp before you and set up your tents, boil drinking water & prepare snacks for your arrival. After washing up, a hot dinner will be served.
DAY 3
Umbwe Cave Camp (2940m) – Barranco Camp (3950m)

At Kilimanjaro Barranco Camp
After an early morning breakfast, you will start your ascent leaving the rain forest and entering the heath land moorland vegetation. In the moorland, you will spot exotic plants, including giant lobelia and groundsel. As you ascent, the trail provides a spectacular view of Mt. Kilimanjaro. The trail then flattens then descends into the Barranco Valley until you reach Barranco Camp. You will enjoy evening snacks then dinner prepared by our chefs.
DAY 4
Barranco Camp (3950m)–Lava Tower (4630m)–Arrow Glacier Camp
DINNER & OVERNIGHT AT
At Kilimanjaro Arrow Glacier Camp
Following an early morning breakfast, you will leave the moorland environment and enter the semi desert and rocky landscape. After 5 hours of hiking east, you will be come face to face with the Lava Tower (4630m). After eating lunch at Lava Tower, hikers will scramble up the steep Class 2 trail to the Arrow Glacier Camp (4800m). Vegetation at Arrow Glacier is sparse and hikers are surrounded by stone scree. Snacks, dinner, and washing water.
DAY 5
Arrow Glacier (4800m) – Crater Camp (5700m)
DINNER & OVERNIGHT AT
At Kilimanjaro Crater Camp
After an early morning breakfast, hikers will continue to scramble up the Class 2 trail on rocks. During the rainy season, an ice ax and crampons are required due to icy conditions. Hikers slowly ascend up the Western Breach to the Crater (5700m). After hiking, you will enjoy a warm dinner and be one of the few and fortunate hikers to stay at the inner, snow-covered crater of Mt. Kilimanjaro
DAY 6
Crater (5700m) – Uhuru Peak (5895m) – Mweka Camp (3100m)
DINNER & OVERNIGHT AT
At Kilimanjaro Mweka Camp
Your guide will wake you around 0400 for tea and biscuits. You will then begin your summit attempt. For about 2 hours, you will hike on a snow-covered trail to Uhuru Peak (5895m). Reaching the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro is a lifetime accomplishment! You will be able to spend a short time on the summit taking photographs and drinking tea before the descent to Barafu begins. After Lunch, you will continue descending down to Mweka Hut (3100m).
DAY 7
Mweka Camp (3100m) – Mweka Gate (1980m)
DINNER & OVERNIGHT AT
A Hotel/Lodge in Arusha
Following a well-deserved breakfast, your staff will have a big celebration full of dancing and singing. After celebrating, you will descend for three hours back to Mweka Gate. The National Park requires all hikers to sign their names to receive certificates of completion. Hikers who reached Stella Point (5685m) and hikers who reached Uhuru Peak receive certificates . After receiving certificates, hikers will descend into the Mweka village.
DAY 8
POST: Drop off at Arusha or JRO Airport for onward journey.

After breakfast, our driver will transfer you to Arusha Airport for your onward flight to your home. **Please note: Safety conditions or weather may cause the itinerary to change without warning. Hike times are estimated, calculated to form a comfortable pace throughout the ascent. The itinerary above serves only as a guide. You can add an extra day if you so wish. You can summit Mt Kilimanjaro via Arrow Glacier or Barafu Camp with Umbwe Route.
The Tour Price Includes
- Filtered water throughout the trek.
- 3 meals daily while on the mountain.
- Transportation to & from the mountain gate.
- Access to emergency oxygen and first aid kit.
- Professional mountain guides, cooks and porters.
- Pick up and drop off at Kilimanjaro International Airport.
- Kilimanjaro certificate for your successful summit attempt.
- Camping equipment – tents, sleeping mattress and camping furniture.
- Accommodation and meals per the itinerary (B=breakfast, L=lunch, D=dinner).
- Dinner on day 1, breakfast, lunch and dinner on day 2-7 and breakfast on day 8 of your trip.
- 3-4 porters per climber, which includes porters to carry up to 30 lbs of your personal gear.
- All Park fees, Rescue fees, Camping fees, and 18% VAT on tour fees and service which cost nearly 60% of the total cost.
- Pre and after trek accommodation at the hotel, 2 nights in your chosen hotel/lodge/resort in Moshi/Arusha with bed & breakfast (BB) Meal.
- Fair wages for the mountain crew as approved by the Kilimanjaro National Park Authority (KINAPA), Kilimanjaro Association of Tour Operators (KIATO).
- Luggage allowance for your main bag, that will be carried by a porter, up to max. 15 kg. To make the porter’s life easier, we however strongly recommend to limit the weight of your main bag to 12 kg. For all bags exceeding 15 kg, you will need to pay for an extra porter
The Tour Price Excludes
- International and domestic flights and departure taxes (Quoted separately where applicable)
- Meals not listed above. eg Breakfast and lunch on the first day and lunch, dinner on the last
- Tanzania Visa cost which is 50% except for Canadian and USA passport holders which is US$100.
- Post Accommodation in Arusha / Moshi The next day after trek (Can be arranged upon request at an extra cost ).
- Optional Tours (short safari/tour after your climb can be arranged upon request at an extra cost).
- Portable flush toilet with a toilet tent is extra (US$100 per toilet + toilet tent)
- Mountain gears + Sleeping bag (can be rented, please ask us at the time of the booking).
- Inoculations and personal insurance (e.g. Tanzania Visa, Travel, Medical and Baggage insurance, A doctor for the group, Laundry, Souvenirs, Telephone, Beverages (available to purchase) and all other services that are not mentioned as included.
- Tips for the crew, which are mandatory on Kilimanjaro. The minimum amount is 15 USD per day per guide, 10 USD per cook per day and 10 USD per porter per day. We however strongly recommend a more correct tip of 25 USD per guide per day, 15 USD per cook per day and 15 USD per porter per day. All these amounts are to be divided by all group members.
- Holiday Surcharge : A supplement of US $ 40.00 per person per day will apply to all bookings on the 24th, 25th, 26th and 31 December and 1st January
- A supplement of US $ 35.00 per person will apply to all bookings between Friday 3rd and Monday 6th April (for all 4 days) as Easter holiday surcharge.
